Star Wars: The Old Republic News – Space Combat Confirmed

Posted by Suzie Ford on Jul 23, 2010  | 150 comments in our forums

At this weekend’s Comic Con in San Diego, Star Wars: The Old Republic developers were on hand for a special panel. During their talk, devs confirmed that space combat will be an integral part of The Old Republic. Devs have a plan to reveal more about space combat in the upcoming weeks including a spread in the October 2010 issue of PC Gamer which goes on sale in mid-August.

If you’ve been following the news coming out of the Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ panel at Comic-Con International, you’ve heard the announcement that we will indeed have Space Combat as part of the TOR experience! But what does that mean? Space combat is an alternative gameplay experience to the primary game of storytelling, questing, and ground-based combat. In space combat, you fly your personal ship to various “hot spots” on your galaxy map. From there, you will blast your way through asteroid fields, enemy fighters, frigates, destroyers, and a variety of other obstacles that will evoke memories of some of the great Star Wars™ space battles. To learn more, pick up the October 2010 edition of PC Gamer which hits newsstands starting August 17th for screenshots and an exclusive interview or check back with us in the weeks to come.

Dungeon Master: Jason ( Kelgoth – Drow Seeker – NPC Guide )
Characters: Immeral (Jacob) , Thard (Steven) , Belladane (Amie) , Adrik (RainMan) , Thorn (Michael) , ****** MORE *********

Backstory on Kelgoth: From a realm of Drow’s forced out because he cannot let himself be as the others. An outcast by choice he left to establish his own home. Knowing full well his kind is hated by all other he sought a remote location where he can be safe. Upon finding a good area to stay deep in the forest he was captured by an extremely powerful mage. The mage seeing the arrogance but good in his heart he was spared and taken in by the mage. Years passed as the mage shows Kelgoth ways to hone his abilities always giving him tasks, Kelgoth one day returned only to find the mage has passed at the hands of someone unknown to him. A dagger, with a symbol unknown to him protruding from the mages back. From this point on Kelgoth studies the arts and collects information in hopes of finding this killer of his Pseudo-Father.

A day in a vast city near the northern most part of the world, Thard and Adrik set sail from the lives they have known looking for adventure… Little do they know what awaits them! Belladane and Immeral travel south in search of a new life away from the tediousness of a normal life only to find an army of monstrous creatures awaits them! Thorn a ranger who is deeply angered by the misuse of nature by careless ingrates chooses to stay in the wilderness where he can have some semblance of peace. One day he is fletching his bow near the coast enjoying the tide and sounds of the ocean, he rubs his eyes while looking into the ocean only to see something coming forth. He drops his half-fletched bow shaft and descends toward the water. As the things appear to him he cannot believe it seems to be people floating toward him. What the hell is going on he thinks…

Thard and Adrick swim for their lives after their boat passed a large spire sticking out of the water carved with foreign markings and was sunk by what? No one knows… As they cling to a bundle of drift wood paddling for their lives with a stranger aboard the ship with them, the unthinkable happens something snatches the stranger below the waves. Seeing this they paddle faster then ever thought possible a man appears to be walking into the water near a beach they can only hope he can save them…. As Thorn watches in amazement yet horror he sees the men struggle to escape the beast so he walks as far as he can into the water to aid the possible enemy’s! Thard and Adrik finally are able to muster up one last rush of energy at the last moment to escape the beast with Thorns help and rush of out the water as the beast snatches up the driftwood bundle and recedes into the ocean…

After forging some sort of comfort with eachother Thorn, Adrik and Thard all make their way to Thorn’s makeshift home in the forest only to see the village far to the east appears to be buring. Shortly after a man runs to their camp asking for help spouting out “THEY’RE COMING” as the men try to question the strange man he is trying to convince Thorn to give him a weapon, Thorn refuses to give up his armerments and fashions a pike out of some wood to appease the strange man… Trying to get information out of the man he runs off, strangely in the direction from which he came… Knowing that he may be a spy or whatnot the men abandon Thorns came and push north deeper into the forest… They find a path running east to west and begin to hear things.

World of Warcraft: Questioning Cataclysm: A Look at Mount Hyjal

In this week’s World of Warcraft: Cataclysm preview, MMORPG.com‘s Garrett Fuller takes a look at the Mount Hyjal zone. Mount Hyjal is probably the area that most level 80s will want to head to on the expansion’s release. Find out what Garrett discovered about Mount Hyjal in his Cataclysm preview.

Previews By Garrett Fuller on July 19, 2010

So in continuing previews of Cataclysm, we wanted to take a look at Mt. Hyjal. The zone really is the first place that many level 80s will venture to when the expansion opens. I transferred by shaman over to have a look around the zone and learned that for all of the new features coming with Cataclysm, WoW remains WoW as we have known it for the last six years.

You start in the zone by doing quests with the Druids to help restore the World Tree. The area instantly opens with starting quests to take out some rock elementals and some fanatics using Fairy Dragons to snuff them out. Two quick and easy quests that most experienced players will go through in less than ten minutes. It is World of Warcraft all over again, day one. The zone is nice and does have some great terrain features to it, but the game play and design are the same as we have known for a long time.

One thing that was a shocking reminder to the old days of WoW I had known was that I chose a PvP server (Gilneas) for my beta, since I play on a PvP server in regular WoW. Instantly I am reminded of ganking as two level 82 Alliance are standing there waiting for me. Well, on a PvP server you take your lumps and keep going. So I did after a few fights though it was time to move on. I do like PvP servers in WoW and would never change over, it was just that I had grown comfortable in my Dalaran home base, with various raid and battleground trips. You can easily forget what it is like leveling in the open world as well as becoming a target for the other faction.

After running a few quests, I took flight to check out the zone as a whole. It is definitely telling of the Cataclysm story line as the Druids and their great tree look to be coming back from the brink of fire and brimstone disaster. In one giant crater where there are fire elementals running wild, it was good to see old Baron Geddon sitting in the middle holding court. I spent many nights on massive raids in Molten Core back in the old days of WoW. It’s nice to see the characters returning.

The one not-so-great thing about Mount Hyjal is that the quest lines are very linear, similar to the starting zones for Worgen and Goblin. The game moves much faster now and Hyjal proves that. While running quests from the various hubs in the zone I truly did not feel like I was lost in terms of story and grinding experience. The system is much more streamlined and give players a better experience overall. If this has been done overall with Cataclysm, which I have heard the Blizzard devs talk about, then the game will move better for players. Finding and completing the quest hubs improved with Wrath of the Lich King and is now much smoother in the news zones for Cataclysm.

Overall Mt. Hyjal has been a good experience, even with the PvP fights going on at almost every quest hub. Still, that is my choice as a player. The zone is solid, has a good story line and keeps you moving through areas at a nice pace so you don’t get tired. There is one thing that I must point out that always kills me when Warcraft does an expansion when it comes to gear. With all of my raid gear from Ice Crown, the minute I get the first drop in Mount Hyjal, the Green item I get is instantly better. I know it has been a while and I know that Blizzard has to find ways to motivate characters to play and gear is always one of those major factors. It still hurts when you see a first drop green item that is better than your epic rig. Call it a personal feeling, I just always felt that Blizzard should keep the epics strong, at least until the first blue drop from the instances.

Now that my shaman has transferred I will continue to explore and review the new zones in Cataclysm. I am looking forward to checking out the new under water area, Vashj’ir. I have to admit, there is no way I can look at the zone and not think of Dark Age of Camelot’s Trials of Atlantis expansion. So when I write that article I will be doing a close comparison of the two. Which leads me to think about how Cataclysm is being presented and what similarities there are between the two games, are they alike? There certainly are comparisons that can be drawn. Next week we will start looking at the other zones as well as some new features from some older games.
