A Prerelease Story.

I haven’t been to a magic tournament in about 13 years, nor any kind of gaming tournament in 5 years.  So I wasn’t sure I was ready for a prerelease event.  When you think of magic players and gaming shops it’s not a great image you get. There are bad players in any game, and bad shops everywhere, but I had a really good experience at area 51, every player I played or talked to between rounds was friendly and in a generally good mood. The staff was friendly and helpful, the owner ran all 3 magic events they had this weekend, and the worst thing I can say about the guy is he is a Saints fan.

On to the events, due to time constraints I was only able to attend the Sunday event. There were 3 events total, a midnight Friday event ( which more table top games and CCG’s should do) ,a Saturday night event using the hellvault, and a Sunday early event using the hellvault. I liked the hellvault they handed out achievement cards with various items on it. ” Quote the flavor text on a card when it’s played.” ” Win a game having only 1 creature in play.” Those are a couple of actual achievements, once you had 8 you turn in your card and they break a seal until all of them are broken and the loot can be given. The loot included an Avacyn d20, oversized legendary creatures, and angel/demon token cards, and maybe something extra just thrown in like judge foils, we didn’t have any of those.

In my 6 packs I didn’t draw anything extraordinary.  I picked up some good rares and uncommons but I didn’t draw enough common help in any one color, so I went with the colors that had the most support, white and blue.  I could have used white/black/red, but it was a toss up. I went 2 and 3 on the day, each round was a best of 3 and I will say this rusty and never being at a prerelease I never lost 2 matches in a row. The new set has a lot of new cards that are really good at an event like this for new players and vets alike. It was a great chance to get new cards and relearn the rules to magic in a good environment.

Angels, angels, angels, the new set is full of them, and they are OP. Along with the new soul bound effect which can be amazing if used correctly, which I didn’t always and the return of the archangel yes now you can get her in foil, ooohh shiny. It’s a good set a bit slow, but the miracle mechanic helps with that a lot. I would suggest this set to new or returning players.

So in my overall opinion the set was good, The players were good, and the location was good. It was a good day and most importantly I had fun. That’s the biggest thing it’s a game if you don’t have fun it’s not worth it, and if someone ruins your fun it’s really not worth it. I will go back to area 51, which says a lot because of how I feel about most shops. I will write more later a deck list of what I played if asked.

Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Masters is the newest franchise from Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, which will feature an online Battle Game (launching May 5), trading card game (available June 24), and a television series airing in the U.S. on The Hub TV network (premiering on June 2). The Kaijudo storyline centers around a young hero, Ray, who possesses the rare ability to befriend and duel alongside fantastical creatures from a parallel dimension. It’s up to Ray to master the ancient art of Kaijudo in order to protect both worlds.

Who is THE CHOTEN?

The Choten is a charismatic evil genius who seeks to exploit the creature civilizations for his own purposes. He is a Kaijudo Master in his own right, but has chosen to follow a different path than the other Masters. He no longer relies on traditional ways of summoning and controlling creatures, instead preferring to use ultra-modern technology and mechanical means to enslave the creatures and control their power.

The Choten has many allies to help him achieve his objectives, including his protégé Alakshmi and her spooky creature Razorkinder, and his second-in-command, Seneschal, a Water creature whose attitude mirrors The Choten’s—and who fully believes in his master’s work. Even with such powerful allies, The Choten doesn’t have a problem dueling when necessary, and is perhaps one of the most dangerous opponents that Ray, Allie, and Gabe may face.

Disney Publishing Worldwide  announced  the launch of two new storybook app titles based on the Marvel Origins series, which were inspired by the original Marvel comics written by Stan Lee.  Only one month prior to the much anticipated theatrical release of “Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Avengers Origins: Hulk” and “Avengers Origins: Assemble!” bring the anticipation for the movie to mobile devices now, allowing fans to read along with Stan Lee as they relive the epic origins of the Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor.

“Because Tony Stark and Bruce Banner are two of my favorite characters, it’s exciting to see their stories as Super Heroes come to life in digital storybook form just a few weeks before the release of ‘Marvel’s The Avengers’ movie,” said Stan Lee.  “They are a great prologue for kids, taking them back to the beginning—revealing how Earth’s Mightiest Heroes assembled to fight foes so powerful that no single Super Hero could defeat them.”

“Avengers Origins: Hulk” is a multifaceted read-along app allowing children ages 4-10 to follow Lee’s story narration of Dr. Bruce Banner’s epic transformation into the Incredible Hulk.  With detailed artwork and cutting-edge animations, comic fans can enjoy this multi-dimensional app through a variety of interactive touch-screen activities, including roaring, transforming into the Hulk, and testing the Hulk’s strength by breaking through walls, stopping tanks, and more.

The “Avengers Origins: Assemble!” app serves as the perfect introduction to exciting Super Heroes like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and more.  Children can read along with Lee, match heroic accessories with each Super Hero, use Thor’s powers and the Hulk’s strength to stop the Atlanteans and Namor, and melt the ice to free Captain America from his frozen prison!

“Avengers Origins: Hulk” and “Avengers Origins: Assemble!” apps are available for $1.99 each from the App Store on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore.  “The Amazing Spider-Man: An Origin Story” is available on the App Store for $3.99 in English, Spanish, Italian, German, French, and Danish.

Well it has been three months and a new top 20 list needs to be done.  This time I think I’m going to list the 20 and save all the comments until the end.  Here is my new top 20 games that I have played as of right now.

1. Magic The Gathering

2. Dominion

3. Lords of Vegas

4. Ticket to Ride

5. Settlers of Catan

6. Balderdash

7. Heroscape

8. Truth Be Told

9. Mystery Express

10. Forbidden Island

11. Arkham Horror

12. Phase 10

13. Agricola

14. Bang!

15. Fury of Dracula

16. Blokus

17. Wits & Wagers

18. Legend of Drizzt

19. Aye Dark Overlord

20. Formula D

The most obvious change to this list is my new number one.  I got back into Magic and have been playing it more than any other game.  Agricola and Fury of Dracula are games I got for Christmas but haven’t had a chance to play them.  I’m still learning how to play them but I enjoy them enough to make my list.  Card games are popular on this list because of ease to play.  Phase 10 is a card game that we played at least twice a week.  Aye Dark Overlord is a story based game played with cards.  My family really enjoys this game so it also made the list.

Everytime I make a new list it gets tougher.  I’m always trying to play new games and see if they make my list.  In three months I will make another list and we will see what changes.

With the upcoming release of the movie Battleship we had to talk about movies based on games.  We also made some changes to this episode.  Let us know what you think.
